PNG Rugby Union Suspended: What It Means for the Future?

The Oceania Rugby Executive Board has decided to suspend the Papua New Guinea (PNG) Rugby Union’s membership due to multiple compliance issues. This decision comes after a detailed independent investigation and extended discussions regarding the governing body’s failure to meet the standards set by Oceania Rugby.

The suspension, which takes effect immediately, is a result of ongoing problems, including PNG Rugby’s absence from important events such as the Oceania Rugby Women’s Championships in Brisbane and the Olympic Sevens qualifying tournament. Additionally, concerns from Provincial Unions about the management and conduct of the board have significantly influenced this decision.

As a result of the suspension, PNG Rugby will forfeit its voting rights within the union and will be excluded from all Oceania Rugby competitions and development programs. Funding to the union will also be postponed.

Frank Puletua, General Manager of Oceania Rugby, highlighted the seriousness of the decision: “The decision to suspend the membership of the Papua New Guinea Rugby Union was not taken lightly. However, due to non-compliance with the Notice of Orders issued in July, we had to take this step, prioritizing the interests of all stakeholders involved with PNG Rugby.”

He added, “I am confident that PNG will soon realize its full potential on both national and global rugby stages. The Executive Board remains dedicated to assisting PNG Rugby in its goal to regain full membership in Oceania Rugby.”
