The Oceania Rugby Executive Board has suspended the membership of the Papua New Guinea (PNG) Rugby Union due to multiple compliance issues. This decision comes after a comprehensive independent investigation and extensive discussions about the governing body’s failure to meet Oceania Rugby’s standards.
The suspension, which is effective immediately, stems from ongoing problems, including PNG Rugby’s non-participation in crucial competitions like the Oceania Rugby Women’s Championships in Brisbane and the Olympic Sevens repechage qualification tournament. Concerns regarding the conduct of the board and management, raised by Provincial Unions, have also played a significant role in this decision.
As a result of the suspension, PNG Rugby will lose its voting rights within the union and be prohibited from participating in Oceania Rugby competitions and development programs. Additionally, funding to the union has been put on hold.
Frank Puletua, the General Manager of Oceania Rugby, highlighted the seriousness of the situation: “The decision to suspend the membership of the Papua New Guinea Rugby Union was not taken lightly. However, due to the non-compliance with the Notice of Orders issued in July, we were compelled to take this step, keeping in mind the best interests of all stakeholders involved with PNG Rugby.”
He also expressed hope for the future: “I am confident that PNG will activate its true potential on the national and world rugby stage soon. The Executive Board remains committed to supporting PNG Rugby in its efforts to be recognized as a full member of Oceania Rugby again.”
