PNG Rugby Union Faces Suspension: What’s Next?

The Oceania Rugby Executive Board has suspended the Papua New Guinea (PNG) Rugby Union’s membership due to multiple compliance issues. This action follows a comprehensive independent investigation and extensive discussions regarding the governing body’s failure to meet Oceania Rugby’s established standards.

The suspension, which is effective immediately, is a result of ongoing problems, including PNG Rugby’s non-participation in crucial events like the Oceania Rugby Women’s Championships held in Brisbane and the Olympic Sevens repechage qualification tournament. Concerns from Provincial Unions about the board and management’s conduct have also played a significant role in this decision.

As a result of the suspension, PNG Rugby will forfeit its voting rights within the union and will be excluded from Oceania Rugby competitions and development programs. Additionally, funding to the union has been put on hold.

Frank Puletua, Oceania Rugby’s General Manager, emphasized the seriousness of the decision, stating, “The decision to suspend the membership of the Papua New Guinea Rugby Union was not taken lightly. However, due to the non-compliance with the Notice of Orders issued in July, we were compelled to take this step, keeping in mind the best interests of all stakeholders involved with PNG Rugby.”

He also expressed hope for PNG Rugby’s future, saying, “I am confident that PNG will activate its true potential on the national and world rugby stage soon. The Executive Board remains committed to supporting PNG Rugby in its efforts to be recognized as a full member of Oceania Rugby again.”
