PNG Kumuls Shock Fiji Bati in Pacific Bowl Opener!

The PNG Kumuls delivered a strong performance, defeating the Vodafone Fiji Bati 22-10 in the opening match of the Pacific Bowl at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

Fiji Bati started the game on a positive note, but it was PNG winger Robert Derby who shifted the momentum by intercepting a pass in his own half and sprinting 70 meters to score, quieting the local supporters.

In the 22nd minute, Fiji’s veteran Michael Jennings had a try ruled out due to obstruction. However, PNG’s fullback Nene McDonald created a scoring opportunity for hooker Judah Rimbu, leading to the second try of the match in the 25th minute. Just before halftime, Slyvester Namo extended the Kumuls’ lead to 16-0 with another try.

Fiji Bati managed to get on the scoreboard early in the second half thanks to Cowboys winger Semi Valemei. Unfortunately for Fiji, a pass from Viliame Kikau was intercepted by Derby shortly thereafter, who then raced nearly the entire length of the field before passing to McDonald for another score, despite being chased by Caleb Navale.

Fiji Bati did not give up and secured a try from Eels winger Maika Sivo towards the end of the game, but it failed to spark a comeback.

The Vodafone Fiji Bati will now have a week to regroup and prepare for their Round 2 match against the Cook Islands, scheduled to take place in Suva next Saturday.
