Former Permanent Secretary to the Office of the Prime Minister, Jioji Kotobalavu, has praised Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s recent initiative to appoint Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) to significant ministerial roles, calling it a “smart move” that could greatly enhance the leadership of the People’s Coalition Government. Kotobalavu emphasizes that this approach reflects a noteworthy commitment to inclusivity and collaboration.
Under Section 92 of the 2013 Constitution, Prime Minister Rabuka is fully empowered to appoint ministers and assistant ministers, a decision that usually involves members from the ruling party only. The unique aspect of this reshuffle is that it includes MPs from the opposition, who are recognized as “cross-bench MPs” with approval from the Speaker of Parliament, legitimizing their participation in government roles.
Kotobalavu believes that this strategic maneuver will lead to significant positive outcomes for the government’s functionality. He argues that by having opposition members in key positions, the People’s Coalition Government will be better equipped to serve the public and address citizens’ needs more effectively. This inclusivity not only strengthens governance capabilities but also reinforces Rabuka’s leadership within both the government and his political party as they approach the final phase of their term.
Plans to introduce Assistant Ministers in critical areas such as Public Works, Justice, and Health are also part of this reshuffle. This aims to alleviate the Prime Minister’s workload and promote greater efficiency in governance.
Ultimately, Kotobalavu’s support for these appointments expresses a hopeful outlook on Fiji’s political landscape, showcasing that bipartisan cooperation can lead to improved governance and enhanced public service delivery. This step signifies a shift toward a more united approach within the government, which could yield significant benefits for the Fijian population as it navigates future challenges.
