At just 28 years old, Ratu Jone Biukoto has established himself as a prominent figure in the plumbing industry with the successful launch of his plumbing service, John’s Plumbing, which recently celebrated its first anniversary.

Hailing from Nabasovi on Koro Island in the Lomaiviti group, Ratu Jone’s story is one of resilience and determination, driven by his commitment to create a better life for his family. His passion for plumbing ignited during his studies at the Fiji National University, where he laid the foundation for his craft. He further honed his skills through hands-on experiences at various local companies, which taught him not only technical expertise but also the importance of continuous growth and learning.

“I never settled well with working under one employer,” Ratu Jone shared, noting his practice of moving between jobs every year to gain varied experiences. This insight led him to embark on his entrepreneurial journey by founding John’s Plumbing.

Motivated by the underappreciation of skilled labor in Fiji, Ratu Jone perceived an opportunity to create a business that aligns with his values. He expressed a frustration with how his previous roles undervalued the hard work put into plumbing, stating, “The payslips I received didn’t reflect the true value of the work I did.”

Initially facing financial difficulties, Ratu Jone displayed exemplary resourcefulness, borrowing tools to kickstart his business. His turning point came when he shared photos of his work on social media, leading to an influx of customers and expanding his operations. Now running from Monday to Saturday, Ratu Jone and his two apprentices offer a diverse range of plumbing services, ensuring a personal touch through direct consultations with clients.

Balancing work and family life poses challenges for Ratu Jone, especially as he strives to spend time with his wife and infant son. His wife, an engineer, has been a strong support system on his journey. He sees these sacrifices as essential for building a brighter future for his family.

With an eye toward the future, Ratu Jone aims to teach his son the value of hard work and plans to expand his services to include construction in the coming years, contingent on obtaining the necessary licensing from the Water Authority of Fiji.

Ratu Jone advises aspiring entrepreneurs to recognize their interests and skills and to take the plunge into business. “If you have the interest and the skills, just do it. Don’t worry about the finances; when you hustle and struggle, things will turn out. And most importantly, pray about it,” he encourages.

Ratu Jone Biukoto’s success is not only a personal milestone but also a beacon of hope for young entrepreneurs in Fiji, illustrating that hard work and dedication can lead to rewarding outcomes, regardless of one’s beginnings.
