Former Fiji 7s coach Ben Gollings has emphasized the need for players to have representation in discussions regarding their welfare and interests within the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU). His statement follows a recent interview with prominent players Lepani Botia, Semi Radradra, and Waisea Nayacalevu, who urged for significant changes in the leadership of the FRU.
Gollings expressed that a designated player representative should be established to communicate the athletes’ concerns directly to the union’s leadership. He highlighted the importance of prioritizing players’ welfare in the FRU’s strategic decisions.
Suva Rugby Union secretary Nemani Tuifagalele echoed Gollings’ sentiments, suggesting that players should create their own organization. He stated that it is essential for players to take the initiative to form a body that can effectively express their concerns and advocate on their behalf to the FRU and other relevant parties.
This call for player representation comes amidst increasing worries within the rugby community regarding the FRU’s management and its relationship with players. Gollings and Tuifagalele’s remarks reflect a growing sentiment that players need a proactive voice in shaping the future of rugby in Fiji.
