Tourism Fiji’s sustainability manager, Sunishma Singh, praised the recent Vesi Reforestation Initiative and the food forest project at Namamanuca Primary School on Yanuya Island, calling them remarkable demonstrations of community collaboration.
Singh noted that the Vesi Reforestation Initiative, which is led by Jacks of Fiji in conjunction with Tokoriki Island Resort, the Forestry Ministry, Agriculture Ministry, Mamanuca Environment Society, and Tourism Fiji, aims to restore the vesi wood, vital for crafting the traditional tanoa used in kava ceremonies. This effort not only helps preserve cultural heritage but also promotes a flourishing environment for future generations.
In addition, she highlighted the significance of the food forest initiative, emphasizing that children are actively involved in sowing the seeds of sustainability. The fruit and teak seedlings they planted will aid in nourishing the community while establishing a foundation for agri-tourism and forestry tourism.
Singh referred to the tree planting as a symbol of a greener, sustainable future that harmonizes tradition and environmental conservation. She emphasized the importance of community and partnerships in driving meaningful change.
The inaugural event saw children engaging in planting food-bearing and timber seedlings to ensure future food and income for their village. Notable figures, including Taukei Yanuya Akuila Lati, Marica Vakacola from the Mamanuca Environment Society, along with Singh and officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Education, participated in the tree planting to commemorate the initiative. The project falls under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts led by Robert Ring, general manager of Tokoriki Island Resort.
This initiative stands as a hopeful example of how local communities can unite to foster sustainability and ensure a healthier planet for generations to come. Such collaborative efforts serve not only to enrich the environment but also to strengthen community bonds, paving the way for a brighter future.
