Plans Developed to Tackle Issues

The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) intends to use master land use plans to tackle problems concerning leases and licenses, according to TLTB environment officer Josua Waqanivalu.

Previously, the TLTB would wait for individuals to express interest in leasing land for specific uses including homes or tourism. However, Waqanivalu pointed out that this disordered approach didn’t involve any thorough planning.

With a comprehensive land use plan in place, areas are clearly marked for specific uses before they’re leased. So if a person expressed interest in leasing land for tourism, the board would be able to direct them to the designated area for tourism.

Waqanivalu went on to explain that this master land use plan would be integrated into the system to serve as a reference for State officials when issuing leases.
