Plan Ahead to Drive Safe: A Weekend Reminder

Drivers are encouraged to plan their travel in advance to reduce the risk of speeding-related accidents. Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana emphasized the importance of time management, particularly with significant events taking place this weekend.

“Every day, we are issuing tickets for speeding, and we worry that if individuals do not manage their time effectively, they may feel compelled to speed,” SSP Divuana stated. He described drivers who ignore speed limits as selfish and inconsiderate to others.

“When people are in a hurry, they are more likely to speed, which is a well-known contributor to accidents and fatalities. It is crucial for drivers to recognize that speeding puts everyone’s safety at risk, and the repercussions extend beyond merely violating traffic laws.”

SSP Divuana also called on the public to take a stand against reckless driving behavior. “If you’re a passenger, don’t hesitate to speak up against dangerous actions. If you’re part of a group planning to travel, ensure that everything is prepared in advance to prevent the driver from feeling rushed,” he advised.

The Fiji Police Force is reminding drivers that speeding increases the likelihood of accidents as it reduces the time available to react and control the vehicle. Additionally, speeding can exacerbate the severity of injuries sustained in crashes and adds to the trauma experienced by the victims’ families.

“We advocate for safe driving practices at all times to help prevent accidents,” the statement concluded.
