Plan Ahead: The Key to Safer Roads This Weekend

Drivers are being urged to plan their journeys in advance to avoid speeding and the potential for accidents. Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, the Director of Traffic, emphasized the importance of time management with significant events taking place this weekend.

“Every day, we are issuing citations for speeding, and we are concerned that poor planning will lead to more drivers exceeding speed limits,” SSP Divuana stated. He described those who ignore speed limits as selfish, showing a lack of consideration for other road users.

“When individuals are running late, they often resort to speeding, which is a well-known factor contributing to accidents and fatalities. It’s crucial for drivers to recognize that speeding endangers everyone’s safety, and the repercussions extend beyond mere legal consequences,” he added.

Furthermore, SSP Divuana encouraged everyone to speak out against dangerous driving behaviors.

“If you are a passenger, voice your concerns; do not tolerate reckless driving. If you are part of a group planning to travel, make sure all preparations are completed in advance to prevent the driver from feeling rushed,” he advised.

The Fiji Police Force reiterated that speeding significantly raises the likelihood of accidents by reducing the time available for drivers to react and maintain vehicle control. Additionally, speeding heightens the severity of injuries sustained in accidents, as well as the emotional toll on victims’ families.

“We encourage safe driving practices at all times to help prevent accidents,” the police reminded motorists.
