Plan Ahead: Avoid Speeding and Stay Safe on the Roads!

Drivers are encouraged to plan their travel in advance to prevent incidents related to speeding. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the Director of Traffic, emphasized the need for careful time management this weekend due to several significant events taking place.

“Every day, we are issuing tickets to drivers for speeding, and we are concerned that a lack of planning could lead to more people exceeding speed limits,” SSP Divuana stated. He noted that drivers who ignore speed regulations demonstrate a lack of consideration for others on the road.

“When individuals are late, it often results in them speeding, a behavior that is linked to accidents and fatalities. Drivers must recognize that speeding endangers everyone’s safety and has consequences that extend beyond simply breaking the law,” he added.

The Director of Traffic urged everyone to help combat poor driving behavior by speaking up. “If you are a passenger, do not hesitate to voice your concerns about dangerous driving habits. If you are part of a group planning to travel, ensure that all preparations are made in advance to prevent the driver from feeling rushed.”

The Fiji Police Force reminds drivers that speeding increases the likelihood of accidents, as it reduces the time available to react and control the vehicle. “Speeding also worsens the severity of injuries sustained in an accident and adds to the trauma experienced by victims’ families,” they stated. “We encourage everyone to practice safe driving consistently to minimize the risk of accidents.”
