Six passengers and their pilot narrowly avoided serious injuries following an incident during landing at the Yasawa Aerodrome yesterday. According to a statement from the Fiji Government, the mishap involved a GA-8 Airvan aircraft, registered as DQ-VAN.
The aircraft took off from Nadi Airport at 9:49 am but overshot the runway upon landing at Yasawa Aerodrome, ultimately coming to rest just outside the runway strip. Although the aircraft suffered damage, particularly to its nose wheel and propeller, all individuals on board were unharmed.
Importantly, the runway at Yasawa Aerodrome remains operational, and aviation activities are proceeding as normal. In response to the incident, Viliame Gavoka, the Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, announced plans to appoint an investigator tasked with conducting a comprehensive inquiry in accordance with established procedures and international safety standards. The findings of this investigation will be crucial in identifying measures to further improve aviation safety.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of rigorous safety protocols in aviation, highlighting the efforts of authorities to ensure passenger safety and the swift response by the relevant agencies. Overall, the situation has concluded without serious injury, allowing for continued aviation activities and reinforcing the commitment to safety in the region.
