Shakeel Pillay of the Denarau Golf Club has emerged as the overall gross champion in the amateur division of the 54th RC Manubhai Ba Open, achieving an impressive score of 142. This victory signifies a significant milestone for Shakeel, as it marks his first win at the Ba Open, providing him the redemption he sought after narrowly missing out on the title last year.
“I feel good to win this year. It feels like redemption after last year’s performance,” shared the 19-year-old golfer. With aspirations to expand his horizons, Shakeel plans to participate in international tournaments, beginning in Australia this coming January. His success can be attributed to his diligent practice routines, often alongside his father at the Denarau Golf Club.
In a closely contested overall gross category, Jalen Raman secured the runner-up position with a score of 144, while Christopher Daniel captured the overall nett title with a score of 130, just ahead of Ganesh Chand, who finished at 131.
The event showcased outstanding performances in various categories. In the A grade gross division, Asish Chand claimed victory with a score of 145, followed by Isei Waqa and Indra Warjan with scores of 150 and 152 respectively. Jainendra Prasad dominated the A grade nett division with a score of 139, leaving Ashwin Sharma and Rohit Chandra behind, both finishing at 142.
The B grade saw Sikipio take the 36-hole gross title with 158, with Sailesh Kumar and Abdul Khan following at 159 and 162. In the nett category for the B grade, Samisoni Mara and Naleen Sharma shared the top spot with scores of 133, while Damon Chen closely followed with 134.
In the C grade gross division, Sunil Sharma topped the leaderboard with a score of 178, followed by Sanjay Singh and Mohit Prasad. Kamal Sharma bested the nett category with a score of 137, with Sanjay Sharma and Yash Kumar finishing closely afterwards.
The women’s division was also competitive, highlighted by Raina Kumar’s commanding performance, which earned her the overall gross title with a score of 150. Seni Loga captured the overall nett title with a score of 130, ahead of Seini Lewai and Lusiana Leqa.
In the professional division, Zoheer Ahmad claimed the championship, outpacing runner-up Roneel Prakash.
