PIF Troika Delays New Caledonia Mission Amid Ongoing Unrest

The Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Troika will delay its mission to New Caledonia until after the conclusion of the 53rd PIF Leaders Meeting in Tonga.

The Troika consists of PIF Chairperson and Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka of Fiji, and Tonga’s Prime Minister Siaosi Sovaleni. Earlier this month, Mr. Brown stated that PIF leaders had reached a consensus to deploy a Troika-led mission in response to the unrest that began on May 13, 2024, in New Caledonia. This mission was requested by New Caledonia’s President of the Government, Louis Mapou, and subsequently approved by the French State.

Mr. Brown noted that the PIF is collaborating with the French government and the New Caledonian authorities to ensure that the mission’s objectives and arrangements satisfy all relevant stakeholders. He also mentioned that the situation in New Caledonia will be a topic of discussion during the leaders’ meeting.
