PIF Chair Calls for Bold Action Amidst Rising Challenges

Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) chair Mark Brown has addressed Foreign Affairs Ministers from the region during their meeting in Suva, urging them to become less reliant on external goodwill. In his opening remarks for the 2024 Forum Foreign Ministers Meeting, Mr. Brown emphasized the region’s growing geostrategic challenges.

He highlighted the ongoing climate crisis, which worsens each year, along with emerging threats such as cyber-attacks and transnational crime. Mr. Brown stressed the necessity of regional political solidarity, encouraging members to respond collectively to any calls for assistance.

He expressed satisfaction that the ministers were using this opportunity to enhance their shared priorities amid rising pressures. Mr. Brown insisted that the region could no longer be passive and must take a more strategic and assertive approach to achieve the collective vision for 2050. He called for candid and constructive discussions, emphasizing the importance of using this space effectively.

As he concludes his term as chair, Mr. Brown thanked the ministers for their support and open communication throughout his tenure. He noted it has been a privilege to lead the Pacific Islands Forum and acknowledged the collaboration of all members over the past 18 months.
