Ronald Philitoga has returned to Fiji to represent the Fiji Bati, bringing joy to his family, friends, and fans. The 23-year-old from Moala, Lau, received a late call-up to join the squad, which he describes as a surreal experience as the significance of the moment sinks in.
“It’s a training trial,” he stated when asked about a possible transfer to the Brisbane Broncos. Philitoga had an impressive season with the Brisbane Tigers in the Hostplus Cup, playing 10 games and scoring 12 tries. He was also awarded the Paul Green Medal for his performance.
Philitoga began playing rugby at the age of 10, transitioning from rugby union to league at the age of 14, driven by his passion for the sport. He developed his skills through school competitions before making his way to the professional level with the Brisbane Tigers in Australia.
His selection for the Bati camp is particularly meaningful, as it marks his first time back in his home country in over a decade. “It feels pretty surreal; I received a late call-up during the week because one of the boys couldn’t make it over,” he shared. “It’s extra special because I haven’t been home in the past 12 years. It’s been like a full circle moment with my first Bati camp, so I’m excited.”
As he prepares for his debut match in the Bati jersey, Philitoga expresses his excitement about the chance to play alongside top rugby league players and learn from them. “Getting the opportunity to compete with some of the world’s top rugby league players is a dream come true. I often find myself pinching myself when I see NRL players I admire in the room.”
He is thankful for this opportunity and is committed to making his fans proud. “We have a pretty young squad, but it’s great to learn from this experience and strive to achieve more. I’m really grateful.”
The Vodafone Fiji Bati will take on the Papua New Guinea Kumuls at 8:10 pm at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva this Saturday.
