A petition seeking the removal of Barbara Malimali from her position as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has received over 100 signatures. The petition, created by Alexandra Forwood on change.org, aims to persuade Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to consult with President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere about terminating Malimali’s appointment.

Forwood alleges that Malimali’s selection was surrounded by questionable circumstances, particularly noting that she was under investigation by FICAC prior to becoming its chief. Furthermore, Forwood contends that Malimali should face charges for purported abuse of office.

“We humbly request you sign our petition,” Forwood stated.

In response, Malimali indicated that public opinion regarding her appointment is welcome, emphasizing the freedoms of the country. The call for Malimali’s ouster has drawn support from notable figures such as former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry and Savenaca Narube, who have both criticized her appointment and urged action against what they see as an abuse of power within FICAC.

A leaked letter from FICAC that details allegations against Finance Minister Biman Prasad has become central to this controversy. Prasad was expected to face charges two weeks ago for not declaring all his assets, income, and liabilities prior to the last election, shortly before Malimali took over as commissioner.

Francis Puleiwai, the acting Deputy Commissioner of FICAC, currently in Australia, described the delay in Prasad’s charges as “sad.”

Forwood, a former resident of Fiji now living in Australia, is the adoptive daughter of a long-time Fiji resident who has been outspoken on issues regarding Fiji’s political landscape.
