In a heartfelt tribute to her late father, renowned Fijian-born artist Paulini Curuenavuli recently released her debut Fijian single. This significant moment occurred last month, coinciding with Father’s Day, a cherished event in Fiji. Paulini, who has been active in the music scene for over two decades, was born in Suva and later moved to West Sydney.
In a conversation with The Sunday Times, Paulini reflected on her musical journey, which began in earnest when she became a contestant on the inaugural season of Australian Idol in 2003. “I knew from a young age that I really enjoyed music, and I loved to sing,” she recounted, explaining how her early involvement in her church’s choir, supported by her parents, played a crucial role in her development as an artist.
Discussing the release of her single, Paulini remarked on the significance of finally launching her first Fijian track after being a recording artist in Australia for many years. “I am very proud, however, I have been a recording artist in Australia for over 20 years now… sorry it has taken so long Fiji,” she noted.
The inspiration for the single, titled “Tamaqu,” began before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 but was postponed due to the global health crisis and the subsequent loss of her father to prostate cancer. After travel restrictions were lifted, Paulini collaborated with Vude Prince, Savuto Vakadewavosa, and traveled back to Fiji to finalize the song. “It was extremely important to me that this song had an authentic Fijian style and sound,” she explained, emphasizing that the recording and mixing took place in Fiji for authenticity.
Paulini expressed her excitement about the release, hoping the song resonates with listeners in Fiji. She had spent nearly two weeks in Fiji working in the studio and was pleased to announce that additional Fijian singles could form an EP that would be released soon.
Collaborating with fellow Fijian artists, including Savuto and Laisa Vulakoro, was a rewarding experience for Paulini. It allowed her to deepen her understanding of Fijian culture and traditional instruments, contributing to the unique sound of “Tamaqu.” The song serves as a loving tribute to her father, facilitating a poignant connection between her life experiences and the emotions conveyed through her music.
Reflecting on the song’s meaning, Paulini shared her yearning to express gratitude and love for her father through her art. Despite the challenges she faced, particularly with translating emotions into iTaukei lyrics, the project was ultimately fulfilling and smooth.
Offering advice to aspiring musicians, Paulini emphasized perseverance and maintaining creative control over one’s work. “Always take every opportunity you are given. It won’t always be easy but if you have determination and a good, close support network you will find the success you aspire to,” she advised. She also cautioned against sacrificing one’s artistic voice, encouraging artists to ensure their input is valued during the creative process.
Despite her success, Paulini remains grounded, emphasizing that her passion for singing, not fame, drives her. She expressed the importance of doing music for love rather than for recognition, as seeking fame can lead to privacy challenges.
Savuto, who collaborated with Paulini on “Tamaqu,” expressed his admiration for her work, calling it a dream come true. He praised her talent and inspirational presence, noting the honor of collaborating with her on a project that is both significant and representative of Fijian culture.
“Tamaqu” is now available across all music platforms, marking an exciting new chapter in Paulini’s artistic journey.
