Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced the completion of an investigation into allegations concerning the unauthorized issuance of Fijian passports to children related to individuals connected with the Grace Road Group. The investigation, which has now been submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for further evaluation, follows significant developments, including the appointment of Viliame Naupoto as the new Minister for Immigration. This role was previously held by Pio Tikoduadua, who stepped down last November amid concerns surrounding the passport issuances.

Rabuka indicated that he is limited in what he can disclose while the case is active. Tikoduadua, while on official duties in Australia, revealed that these passports were issued without his knowledge or the required approval from senior officials at the Department of Immigration. This prompted Rabuka to temporarily assume the immigration portfolio while investigations were conducted by both the Fiji Police Force and the Department of Immigration. The Director of Immigration, Amelia Komaisavai, has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigations.

The Grace Road Group has consistently denied any wrongdoing, arguing that children born in Fiji have the right to citizenship under the Citizenship of Fiji Act 2009, which does not require ministerial approval. They also contend that the allegations are politically motivated and have been exaggerated. In addition, the Ministry of Employment has identified violations of the Employment Relations Act and the Health and Safety at Work Act within Grace Road’s operations, underscoring the importance of compliance with labor regulations.

The handling of this situation reflects the Fijian government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
