Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has publicly stated that he is prepared to intervene in a situation involving Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua, if needed. This comes amid allegations regarding the unauthorized issuance of Fijian passports, particularly to children of individuals associated with the Grace Road Group, which has faced human rights allegations.
Mr. Tikoduadua claims that these passports were issued without his knowledge or the approval of senior management within the Department of Immigration. He has indicated his willingness to step aside if the Prime Minister advises him to do so. Mr. Rabuka confirmed he received an email on this matter but prefers to discuss it directly with Mr. Tikoduadua before making a decision, stating, “I will not decide on anything until I speak to him.” The two are slated to meet on Monday.
In the meantime, Amelia Komaisavai, the director of Immigration, has been placed on leave as the investigation continues.
On another note, Grace Road Group has issued a statement categorically denying wrongdoing, labeling the allegations as “sensationalised false information.” They assert that children born in Fiji are citizens under the Citizenship of Fiji Act 2009 and contend that neither ministerial nor departmental authorization is necessary for their citizenship status. The group attributes the controversy to political targeting and misinterpretation of the law.
Separately, the Ministry of Employment has reported breaches of the Employment Relations Act 2007 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1996 in inspections of Grace Road Company operations throughout Viti Levu. Line Minister Agni Deo Singh has committed to further investigations, emphasizing the necessity of compliance with employment laws for all workers, both local and migrant.
This situation illuminates the importance of transparency and accountability in governance. As investigations proceed, there is an opportunity for improved practices within the immigration system and adherence to labor laws which can ultimately protect the rights of all workers in Fiji.
In summary, Prime Minister Rabuka is prepared to act in the ongoing investigation into unauthorized passport issuances tied to the Grace Road Group. As both government and corporate entities are involved, this could pave the way for necessary reforms in immigration and labor practices, benefiting Fiji’s citizens and promoting fair treatment for all workers.
