Passion serves as the driving force behind motivation, invigorating individuals even during challenging times. This sentiment resonates with Sonu Sanjay Dutt from Labasa, whose dedication centers on promoting forest and wildlife conservation.
At 40 years old, Dutt has spent over a decade as an officer with the Ministry of Forestry at the Forest Resource Assessment and Conservation Division (FRAC) in Colo-i-Suva. His upbringing on a farm, surrounded by trees and natural resources, ignited his passion for advocating forest conservation.
He describes his job as a remarkable learning experience, stating, “I’m learning more about the environment and how nature-based solutions can assist people in their daily lives.” His enthusiasm for the importance of forests shines through as he emphasizes the slow maturation of native trees, which takes between 80 to 100 years.
Dutt reflects on his childhood experiences, sharing how growing up on a sugarcane farm provided him with a deep appreciation for the resources trees offer, such as fruits and clean water. His intelligence and dedication were evident during his school years, which set him on a promising path.
Even after relocating to Suva City, Dutt continued to explore nearby forests, viewing them as vital sources of resources. He urges everyone to use forest trees sustainably and to foster a love and respect for trees, saying, “Please love your trees.”
This story is a testament to the power of passion and dedication in advocating for the environment. The insights and encouragement provided by Dutt serve as a reminder of the importance of preserving natural resources for future generations. Through his work, he not only contributes to the conservation efforts but also inspires others to cherish and protect their natural surroundings for a more sustainable future.
