Sonu Sanjay Dutt, a dedicated officer of the Ministry of Forestry in Fiji, embodies a profound passion for forest and wildlife conservation that motivates him daily. At 40 years old and having spent over a decade in the Ministry’s Forest Resource Assessment and Conservation Division (FRAC) in Colo-i-Suva, Dutt draws inspiration from his childhood experiences growing up on a sugarcane farm surrounded by trees and nature.
His early life instilled in him an appreciation for the environment, leading him to advocate for the sustainable use and conservation of forest resources. “Working at the ministry is a great learning opportunity,” Dutt mentions, highlighting his commitment to expanding his knowledge on how nature-based solutions can benefit communities.
Dutt emphasizes the time and care required for native and endemic trees to mature, noting that it can take between 80 to 100 years. He urges everyone to prioritize conservation efforts so future generations can inherit these vital resources. His perspective on forests as abundant supermarkets reflects his understanding of their importance—providing essential resources such as clean air and timber.
After moving to Suva, Dutt continued to cherish his adventures in the forests, creeks, and rivers, reaffirming his connection to nature. “As I grew up, I started learning new things about the environment and now, I am working at the Ministry of Forestry pursuing my dream,” he says with enthusiasm.
In his heartfelt message to the public, Dutt encourages everyone to understand and respect the significance of trees, calling for sustainable practices that protect these natural treasures. “Please, love your trees,” he implores, representing a hopeful reminder of the collective responsibility required to preserve our environment.
This optimistic plea underscores the vital role each individual can play in fostering a sustainable relationship with nature, ensuring the health of forests for generations to come. By promoting love and respect for trees, we can all contribute to a healthier planet.
