Pasifika Leader Honored for Service and Community Impact

Brian Pulefolau, renowned for his dedication to the Pasifika community in south Auckland, has been honored for his voluntary work over the years. The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) has recognized his service to the country as the Supervisor of Security Guard Forces at Papakura Military Camp.

Brigadier Rob Krushka presented Mr. Pulefolau with a Commendation for Exceptional Leadership, commending him for exemplifying the qualities desired in NZDF personnel. He described Mr. Pulefolau as a model of professionalism and commitment, representing the highest ideals of the Defence Force.

Originally from Niue, Mr. Pulefolau joined the NZDF in 2013 and has held various roles in Defence Security, specifically supervising security operations at the Papakura camp since 2018. His responsibilities include managing camp security, guest reservations, emergency procedures, and ensuring his team receives proper training.

In addition to his supervisory role, Mr. Pulefolau has introduced healthy lifestyle initiatives at the camp, covering financial wellness, physical fitness, and nutrition. These programs have positively impacted the long-term health of his team and their families, with several achieving milestones such as purchasing their first homes.

Demonstrating a commitment to his team, Mr. Pulefolau uses repurposed fishing equipment from departing soldiers to teach valuable life skills, including fishing, resulting in successful catches of snapper and kahawai.

He remains a prominent leader in the Pasifika community, dedicating time to various charitable efforts beyond his military duties. Brigadier Krushka highlighted Mr. Pulefolau as an active community member involved in local sports and church activities, as well as being a devoted father.

Mr. Pulefolau also manages initiatives to send recycled goods to the Pacific, such as civilian clothing that would otherwise go to waste, which he sends to Fiji, and building materials destined for Tonga to aid in reconstruction efforts following cyclones.

With his wife Betty, he co-founded the Pasifika Autism Assist Group to raise awareness of neurodiversity within the Pasifika community and provide a supportive space for families with autistic members. For his efforts, he received the Volunteer of the Year Award from Autism New Zealand in 2016.
