Brian Pulefolau, recognized for his unwavering commitment to serving his people and the Pasifika community in South Auckland, has garnered multiple accolades for his volunteer work over the years.

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) has now formally recognized his service to the country by awarding him a Commendation for Exceptional Leadership as the Supervisor of Security Guard Forces at Papakura Military Camp. Brigadier Rob Krushka praised Mr. Pulefolau, stating that he exemplifies the qualities the Defence Force seeks in its personnel.

“He is a symbol of professionalism and steadfast dedication to duty, embodying the ideals and highest customs of the New Zealand Defence Force,” Brigadier Krushka remarked. “He is a great ambassador and a proud member of the Security Guard Force leadership.”

Originally from Niue, Mr. Pulefolau joined the NZDF in 2013 and has held various roles in Defence Security. Since 2018, he has been overseeing security operations at the south Auckland camp. His responsibilities include managing camp security, coordinating guest reservations, monitoring emergency procedures, escorting emergency services, and ensuring that his team receives thorough training.

Moreover, Mr. Pulefolau has initiated several wellness programs at the camp, including financial wellness training, physical exercise, and healthy nutrition. These programs have greatly improved the overall health and wellbeing of his staff and their families, with many even purchasing their first homes as a result of the support.

“I genuinely care about my team and aspire to make a difference beyond my daily job responsibilities,” Mr. Pulefolau shared. He also teaches his team valuable life skills, such as fishing, utilizing repurposed rods and reels from departing soldiers, which has led to a successful catch of snapper and kahawai.

In addition to his camp duties, he actively supports the wider Pasifika community both in Auckland and globally. Raised in Manurewa, Mr. Pulefolau dedicates time outside the NZDF, a commitment that Brigadier Krushka has wholeheartedly recognized. “He is an active member of his local community, church group, sports teams, and the broader Pasifika community, while being a loving and devoted father,” he stated.

Mr. Pulefolau also manages programs to send recycled goods to the Pacific, recycling civilian clothing from soldiers and sending it to Fiji and repurposing building materials to assist with housing reconstruction in Tonga following cyclone damage.

Together with his wife Betty, he co-founded the Pasifika Autism assist Group, raising awareness of neurodiversity within the Pasifika community and creating a space for families to connect and share experiences regarding autism. In recognition of his efforts, Autism New Zealand awarded him the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2016.
