Brian Pulefolau, well-known for his dedicated service to the Pasifika community in South Auckland, has been recognized by the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) for his contributions as the Supervisor of Security Guard Forces at Papakura Military Camp.
Brigadier Rob Krushka awarded Mr. Pulefolau a Commendation for Exceptional Leadership, highlighting his professionalism and commitment to duty. Brigadier Krushka praised him as a role model who exemplifies the values of the Defence Force and serves as a proud leader within the Security Guard Force.
Originally from Niue, Mr. Pulefolau joined the NZDF in 2013 and has held various positions in Defence Security. Since 2018, he has led the security team at the South Auckland camp, overseeing camp security operations, managing guest reservations, coordinating emergency procedures, and ensuring the proper training of his staff.
In addition to security duties, Mr. Pulefolau has launched several healthy lifestyle initiatives at the camp, including programs for financial wellness, physical fitness, and nutrition. These efforts have positively impacted the long-term health of his team and their families, with many achieving milestones such as purchasing their first homes.
Mr. Pulefolau expressed his dedication to his team and the desire to make a meaningful impact beyond his official responsibilities. He has also shared practical life skills, including fishing, using repurposed fishing rods from departing soldiers, leading to successful catches of snapper and kahawai.
Recognized as an involved member of both his local community and the wider Pasifika community, Mr. Pulefolau dedicates time to various volunteer activities. Brigadier Krushka noted his active participation in community groups, sports teams, and church activities, alongside his role as a devoted father.
Additionally, Mr. Pulefolau manages programs that recycle goods for the Pacific Islands, such as sending civilian clothing to Fiji and building materials to Tonga for cyclone recovery efforts. Alongside his wife, Betty, he co-founded the Pasifika Autism Assist Group to raise awareness of neurodiversity and provide support for Pasifika families caring for individuals on the autism spectrum. His volunteer efforts earned him the Volunteer of the Year Award from Autism New Zealand in 2016.
