The NGO Coalition on Human Rights (NGOCHR) has criticized the Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, for his troubling treatment of independent opposition MP Aliki Bia. In a statement, the NGOCHR noted that Mr. Bia raised concerns about the welfare of the Melanesian community during a parliamentary session on September 6.
Records from that day show that Ratu Naiqama commented that many individuals from the Melanesian group were “not paying for anything.” He mentioned that some members of the community were registered in his village and claimed that the descendants of Solomon Islanders had no right to complain about mistreatment since they already participated in the democratic process.
Ratu Naiqama expressed his disagreement with Bia’s claims of discrimination, suggesting that those who have seats in Parliament and can vote should not assert they are being mistreated.
According to the NGOCHR, such remarks reflect the challenges faced by ethnic minorities in Fiji when trying to voice the injustices they endure. The group denounced the Speaker’s racially charged comments, stating they not only undermine his role but also exacerbate divisions within the society, threatening Fiji’s social harmony.
The NGOCHR expressed dismay at the Speaker’s remarks and his dismissal of critical issues, labeling this behavior as contrary to the nation’s shared values. They emphasized that such rhetoric contradicts the principles of equality and inclusion that Fiji has sought to uphold since its independence, further marginalizing the Melanesian community.
They called on Ratu Naiqama to reconsider his actions and the negative impact of his statements. The NGOCHR stressed that inaction against divisive comments is unacceptable, urging leaders to confront discrimination in all forms. They believe that valuing justice and unity is essential for fostering a truly inclusive society in Fiji.
