Parliament’s Opposition Split: Two Blocs Revealed!

The Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, announced today the existence of two distinct groups within the Opposition in Parliament.

He indicated that one group, consisting of 16 members, is led by the Leader of the Opposition. This group will officially be referred to as the “group of 16,” with the honourable Jone Usamate serving as their Whip and the honourable Ketan Lal as their Deputy Whip.

The second group, comprising 9 members, is led by the honourable Ioane Naivalurua. In this bloc, the honourable Viliame Naupoto holds the position of Whip, while the honourable Alipate Tuicolo serves as the Deputy Whip.

Ratu Naiqama confirmed that all 26 members continue to represent the Opposition while functioning within these two groups. He emphasized his responsibility under the Standing Orders to safeguard the rights and privileges of all members of Parliament, as well as those within the standing and select committees.

To address the formation of these two groups, his office will conduct a review of the membership for the six standing committees and four select committees to ensure equitable representation for both blocs. Further announcements regarding this matter are expected later this week.
