Parliamentary Apologies: When Decorum Dips

The Minister for Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh, has issued an apology to the House for his inappropriate behavior and use of unparliamentary language during his Ministerial Statement last Tuesday, as per Standing Orders 80.

In his remarks, Singh expressed regret, stating, “I would like to apologise to the House for any language or untoward comments I may have used which may have offended any individual Member of this House.”

Opposition MP Praveen Bala also took the opportunity to apologize under the same Standing Order, expressing remorse if his words had caused any offense to others.

Speaker of Parliament Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu responded by urging all members to maintain decorum within the House. He noted, “I would like to implore you honourable Members of this august House, let us keep the decorum always,” and added that members seem to lose their composure too quickly. Ratu Naiqama also reminded them to be mindful of the public and children observing the proceedings, whether on television or from the gallery.
