Parliamentary Apologies: A Call for Decorum Amidst Turbulent Times

The Minister for Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh, issued an apology to the House under Standing Orders 80 for his inappropriate behavior and use of unparliamentary language during his Ministerial Statement last Tuesday. He expressed regret, stating, “I would like to apologise to the House for any language or hurtful comments I may have made that offended any individual Member of this House.”

Opposition MP Praveen Bala also took the opportunity to apologize under the same standing order, acknowledging that he may have caused offense with his words.

In response, Speaker of Parliament Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu emphasized the importance of maintaining decorum within the House. He remarked, “I would like to implore you honourable Members of this august House, let us keep the decorum always.” Ratu Naiqama urged the members to be mindful of their behavior, noting that they should remain composed rather than letting their tempers flare, as this impacts the perception of the proceedings by the public and children watching from the gallery or on television.
