Parliamentary Apologies: A Call for Decorum Amidst Heated Exchanges

The Minister for Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh, issued an apology to the House for his inappropriate behavior and use of unparliamentary language during his Ministerial Statement last Tuesday, as per Standing Orders 80. In his explanation, Singh expressed regret by stating, “I would like to apologize to the House for any language or untoward comments I may have used in this House, which may have offended any individual Member.”

Additionally, Opposition MP Praveen Bala also apologized under Standing Order 80 for any offense caused by his use of inappropriate language.

The Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, addressed the members, urging them to maintain decorum. He remarked, “I would like to implore you honourable Members of this august House, let us keep the decorum always.” Ratu Naiqama emphasized that members seem to escalate quickly from calmness to anger, suggesting that members should be more mindful, especially considering the public and children watching the proceedings on television or from the gallery.
