Parliamentary Apologies: A Call for Decorum Amidst Heated Debates

The Minister for Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh, issued an apology to Parliament for his inappropriate behavior and use of unparliamentary language during his Ministerial Statement last Tuesday. Singh expressed regret, stating, “I would like to apologise to the House for any language or untoward comments I may have used in this House, which may have offended any individual Member.”

In a similar vein, Opposition MP Praveen Bala also apologized under Standing Order 80, expressing regret if his words had caused any offense to his colleagues.

The Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, responded by urging all members to maintain decorum, saying, “I would like to implore you honourable Members of this august House, let us keep the decorum always.” He remarked on how quickly members can escalate their emotions and reminded them to be mindful of the public and children who watch the proceedings either on television or from the gallery.
