Parliamentary Apologies: A Call for Decorum Amidst Controversy

The Minister for Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh, issued an apology to the House under Standing Orders 80 for his inappropriate conduct and language during a Ministerial Statement last Tuesday. Singh expressed, “I would like to apologise to the House for any language or untoward comments I may have used that might have offended any individual Member of this House.”

Opposition MP Praveen Bala also took the opportunity to apologize under the same standing order, stating he regretted if he had offended anyone with his language.

The Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, responded by urging members to maintain decorum in the House. He pointed out the need for members to remain composed, saying, “You seem to take off on a very speedy pace when you are cool to when you blow up your position. So maybe you have been counting your money a lot that is why I think it is.” Ratu Naiqama emphasized the importance of considering the public and the children who are either watching the proceedings on television or present in the gallery.
