Parliament Suspended Amid Water Crisis: What’s Next for Fiji?

The Parliamentary session has been canceled for today due to a three-day water outage impacting the Nausori-Suva area. Speaker of Parliament Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu announced the suspension of proceedings yesterday.

An advisory from the Parliament of the Republic of Fiji explained that the necessary preparations for the water shortage were inadequate to ensure proper hygiene standards within the Parliamentary complex, raising Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) concerns.

“Parliament will be closed tomorrow and will resume normal operations on Monday, October 7, 2024,” the advisory confirmed. In the meantime, Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro stated that schools will remain open today.

Minister Radrodro mentioned that the ministry is collaborating with the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) to guarantee that schools have an adequate water supply during classes. Minister for Public Works Ro Filipe Tuisawau reassured the public that the WAF is prepared to handle the planned water disruption.

“Water trucks will be on standby, and if residents in the Nausori-Suva corridor require water, they should contact WAF,” Ro Filipe said.

Those affected are encouraged to reach out to WAF’s toll-free number 334 6777, shortcode 5777 (available on all mobile networks), the WAF Mobile App, or email contact@waf.com.fj for assistance.
