Parliament will enter a prorogation period starting Monday, December 16, 2024, and will remain suspended until the State Opening on Monday, February 24, 2025. Prorogation marks the conclusion of a parliamentary session within the standard four-year term.
The Speaker of Parliament has officially notified the President about this prorogation, as well as the forthcoming State Opening of Parliament. During this interim, all parliamentary activities—including sittings and Standing Committee proceedings—will be on hold, except for urgent matters which may be handled at the Speaker’s discretion.
The ceremonial State Opening of the third session is set to be led by His Excellency the President of Fiji, Ratu Naiqama Tawakecolati Lalabalavu, on February 24 at 10:00 a.m., and will feature a military Guard-of-Honour provided by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces. The event will also include key judicial figures, such as the Acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo and Justices of Appeal.
Following the State Opening, Parliament is scheduled to reconvene on March 3, 2025, for a two-week session. While prorogation pauses legislative actions, the Parliament secretariat will maintain its operations throughout this period unless stated otherwise.
This cyclical process of prorogation allows members of Parliament to regroup and prepare for new legislative initiatives and discussions, presenting an opportunity for a refreshed start and setting important priorities for the upcoming session. It is a reminder of the intricate system of governance that allows for both stability and progress in addressing national issues.
