Parliament Poised for Presidential Shift in Fiji

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the current Speaker of Parliament, will be the Government’s nominee for Fiji’s new President when Parliament meets to make the appointment at the end of this month. This decision follows the formal withdrawal of Ratu Wiliame Katonivere’s name from consideration for a second term.

Mr. Rabuka stated, “On October 17, 2024, I reached out to His Excellency the President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere to seek his approval to be nominated for another term as President and Head of State under section 84(2) of the Constitution of the Republic of Fiji.” He further explained that on October 21, he received official communication from President Katonivere indicating his withdrawal from the nomination process.

In addition, Mr. Rabuka paid tribute to Ratu Wiliame for his dedicated service. “I want to honor His Excellency the President Na Gone Turaga Bale na Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere for his service to our nation,” he said. He praised Ratu Wiliame for carrying out his role as Head of State with integrity and diligence, particularly during the transition of government following the December 2022 general election.

Mr. Rabuka noted that Ratu Wiliame’s presidency was characterized by unprecedented freedoms for the people of Fiji and that he represented the unity and integrity of the state both domestically and internationally. The Prime Minister mentioned that a formal ceremony would be held to express the nation’s gratitude to Ratu Wiliame in accordance with traditional protocols at the conclusion of his term.
