Parliament in Turmoil: Allegations of GPs Steering Patients to Their Own Pharmacies

The Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, urged independent Member Virendra Lal to present evidence regarding allegations that some General Practitioners (GPs) are directing patients to their own or associates’ pharmacies when issuing prescriptions.

During a parliamentary session on Tuesday, Mr. Lal raised concerns about GPs enrolled in the Public-Private Partnership Healthcare Scheme who, according to him, are advising patients to visit specific pharmacies instead of utilizing health centers and hospitals for their medication needs. He questioned whether adequate education is being provided to patients about these practices.

In response, Ratu Naiqama emphasized the seriousness of Mr. Lal’s claim and insisted that he substantiate it with proof. “Honourable Member, you have indicated a very serious situation where you are saying that some of the doctors are referring them to their own pharmacies? Do you have evidence of that?” he asked.

Mr. Lal assured he could provide evidence. However, Ratu Naiqama reiterated the importance of backing up the claims with factual support, expressing his reluctance to allow the matter to proceed without proper substantiation. He stressed the need for caution in making such allegations.
