Park Pride: Who’s Responsible for Ratu Sukuna’s Litter?

Ratu Sukuna Park is currently undergoing minor repairs, and it is not yet fully under the responsibility of the Suva City Council (SCC), according to Chairman Tevita Boseiwaqa. His comments come in response to concerns regarding littering at the newly refurbished park, which reopened last year.

Boseiwaqa emphasized the need for public cooperation in maintaining the park, highlighting the importance of civic pride among the community. “The public should really have to learn the importance of civic pride and change their mentality and attitude,” he stated. He pointed out that Menon Construction Ltd, the company responsible for the park’s refurbishment, has not officially handed it over to the SCC because certain minor tasks remain incomplete. These tasks include the installation of lights on trees within the park, which the contracting company is now starting to install after delays in ordering.

Despite the ongoing repairs, the council is closely monitoring the project’s costs associated with these additional tasks and is ensuring that the public understands the importance of keeping the park clean. Boseiwaqa expressed a commitment to follow up on the situation while stressing that as long as the park remains under the construction company’s control, the SCC cannot actively clean it up.

The park represents a significant investment of $7 million and showcases not only beautiful green space but also modern amenities. Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica previously urged all Fijians to take responsibility for maintaining the park’s beauty, emphasizing its importance for community well-being and as a space of comfort for future generations.

This collaboration will be crucial in transforming Suva into a city that embraces nature and encourages a culture of respect for public spaces. With collective efforts and a renewed sense of civic pride, there is hope that Ratu Sukuna Park will not only be a recreational area but also a cherished community gem thriving for years to come.
