Parents Urged: Is Quality Time the Key to Curbing Drug Issues?

Government officials are united in their plea for parents to dedicate more time to their children as a strategy to combat the concerning rise in drug-related issues. In a recent video address aimed at young people, Justice Minister Siromi Turaga emphasized the importance of thoughtful decision-making, highlighting that every choice made can have significant long-term effects on health, education, and wellbeing. He encouraged children to pause and consider the potential consequences of their decisions, and to seek guidance from trusted adults whenever possible.

Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Lenora Qereqeretabua also advocated for parental involvement, urging parents and guardians to prioritize time spent with their kids, which may require sacrificing some personal commitments such as social obligations and time on digital devices. She expressed that children are both the present and future, deserving of love and attention.

Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru stressed the value of quality time, advising families to engage in meaningful activities together, which can foster communication and strengthen bonds. His sentiments were echoed by Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Filimoni Vosarogo, who reinforced the importance of prioritizing family interactions and reassurance.

Moreover, Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, the chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs, called for a collective effort to guide and protect children, asserting that, as a small nation, Fiji must collaboratively fight against the issues of drug abuse and negative behavior affecting the youth.

This initiative reflects a hopeful understanding among leaders that by investing in quality time with children, families can build a stronger, healthier community, ultimately leading to a brighter future for the next generation. The call for parental engagement serves as a reminder of the crucial role that families play in shaping the lives of children, fostering an environment that prioritizes health, safety, and positive growth.

In summary, as leaders encourage increased family time, the focus remains on nurturing the youth by addressing broader social issues, thereby fostering hope for a more resilient future.
