Parents on Alert: Rising Drug Concerns in Schools

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has called on parents to stay vigilant amid rising concerns about drug use in schools. When questioned about his worries on the matter, he expressed his concerns and emphasized the need for more proactive measures to address the issue.

Rabuka mentioned that the current approach has mainly relied on parental and community support, particularly for law enforcement. “So far, we have not done anything extra beyond requesting community involvement,” he stated, stressing that additional efforts are necessary, especially regarding the narcotics legislation being introduced. He urged parents to remain aware of various developments related to drug issues both nationally and within their homes.

Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua echoed these sentiments, urging the public to adhere to the mantra of saying “no to drugs.” He highlighted that empowering individuals, especially vulnerable students, to make informed choices is crucial in the fight against drug use. Tikoduadua mentioned that the Ministry of Education is implementing programs focused on creating safe and drug-free school environments, a commitment supported by the government’s anti-narcotics strategy.

He asserted that those who exploit children must face severe consequences. In instances where students are found in possession of drugs on school grounds, it is critical to file formal reports to law enforcement to investigate how the drugs were obtained. “This is inexcusable,” he stated, underlining the importance of addressing drug-related issues as a collective societal responsibility.

Tikoduadua also emphasized the necessity of reinforcing existing school systems to deter students from engaging with drugs. He expressed hope that ongoing awareness initiatives would guide students in making healthier choices.
