Paradise at Stake: Village Hopes for Five-Star Hotel Amid Marine Concerns

Residents of Nabuna in the Cawa district on Koro Island are expressing cautious optimism about an upcoming five-star hotel project on their land. While the community is welcoming the potential for job creation and economic growth, there are concerns regarding the potential negative effects on the local marine ecosystem.

Sekaia Bolabola, the district representative for Cawa, emphasized the economic benefits the hotel could bring, particularly in terms of employment for local youth. “We are looking forward to the five-star hotel that will be established here in Nabuna. It will be owned and developed by overseas business people,” he stated.

At the same time, Bolabola highlighted the importance of protecting the fragile marine environment amidst this development. “A lot of development is coming through, however, we hope our marine ecosystem is maintained in the process. That is something to discuss later,” he noted.

He reiterated that the hotel development would offer significant employment opportunities, encouraging young people to work locally and diverting their attention from negative social issues. “Of course, we support this new development. It’ll encourage our youths to work here,” he added.

Construction on the hotel project is expected to begin soon, likely within the next few weeks. Additionally, a feasibility study has been completed for a proposed jetty in Nabuna, which aims to improve access for both business operators and local residents.
