PALM Workers’ Health: Alcohol Misconceptions or Workplace Hazards?

Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh has stated that the recent reports of hospitalizations and deaths among PALM workers are linked to alcohol consumption rather than workplace conditions. He emphasized that there are no rising concerns regarding the safety of the work environment, and underscored that the incidents involving hospitalized workers and a deceased individual were specifically alcohol-related, describing the situation as unfortunate.

In a previous announcement, the government indicated plans for a visit to PALM workers in Australia this October, aiming to address various grievances reported by the workers. These issues include allegations of racism, bullying, heavy workloads, exploitation, threats, unsafe practices, unfair termination, and forced labor.

The Employment Ministry intends to engage with Australian authorities, employers, and the workers themselves to discuss these matters and seek resolutions. To improve oversight and ensure fair labor practices, the ministry will collaborate closely with Australian authorities and employers, committing to regular inspections, audits, and enforcing a strict zero-tolerance policy against exploitation and mistreatment.

The Australian Workers Union (AWU) has expressed its support in maintaining minimum standards during these inspections. Additionally, the Employment Ministry will continue to strengthen its partnerships with Australian entities, including the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR).
