The arrival of the first major equipment for the Pacific Mini Games has been confirmed with the delivery of new canoes to Palau. This development represents a key milestone in the preparation for the event, scheduled to take place from June 29 to July 9, 2025.
Team Palau has received a total of 14 canoes, comprising six V6 canoes and eight V1 canoes, all acquired with substantial financial support. Blue Bay contributed US$20,000, while the Pacific Mini Games Organising Committee provided an additional US$37,000, bringing the total investment to US$57,000. These canoes, crafted in Fiji, were transported to Palau and are set to undergo testing by the national team.
The logistics of securing the canoes involved local partners, including Surangel and Sons Construction Company, which sponsored their transfer to the canoe venue at Meyuns Ramp (Skojio). The Koror State Government also played a role by providing a safe storage solution to protect the canoes from weather conditions.
This investment symbolizes the first acquisition of new canoes for Palau’s national canoe program in over two decades, generating excitement among the paddlers. Team Palau is composed of more than 40 enthusiastic athletes competing for a place on the final roster, which aims to feature 11 men and 11 women. The canoe events will encompass both sprint and long-distance races, offering 500m and 1500m sprints, along with challenging 20k and 15k long-distance races for men and women, respectively.
The official unveiling of the canoes brought together key figures and partners supporting Team Palau, further solidifying the collaborative effort towards ensuring a successful event delivery.
The arrival of these canoes is not just a significant development for Team Palau, but also a testament to the ongoing preparation and teamwork surrounding the Pacific Mini Games. With the promise of exciting competitions and a platform to showcase their talents, both paddlers and organizers are looking forward to making a mark in the upcoming games. The community’s support and dedication to athletes in Palau are set to elevate their performance and foster local pride in the process.
