This week, the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference will focus on advancements and ongoing challenges related to gender equality. Delegates from 12 Pacific nations, along with representatives from civil society organizations, will convene in Bangkok, Thailand. Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Lynda Tabuya, will participate in this significant event.
According to Delphine Serumaga, the UN Women Fiji representative, the Asia Pacific Ministerial Meeting on the Beijing +30 Review is a crucial occasion for the region. She emphasized that it provides a platform to amplify the voices of Pacific nations and reaffirm collective commitments to gender equality on a global level. “The Pacific has a powerful role in the journey towards fulfilling the commitments made 30 years ago, and together, we will continue to help progress with this,” Ms. Serumaga stated.
UN Women Fiji has highlighted the importance of collaboration among leaders, advocates, and policymakers to ensure that the specific needs and aspirations of Pacific women and girls are represented. Fiji has been a supporter of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPfA) since 1995, which aims to promote gender equality and empower women and girls globally.
This year, Ms. Tabuya informed Parliament that the BPfA process allows Fiji to conduct a national review encompassing 12 critical areas, including inclusive development, social protection, and the fight against violence.
The gathering underscores a hopeful commitment from Pacific nations to advance gender equality and address the unique concerns of their women and girls. As the conference progresses, it will be essential to see how the discussions translate into actionable outcomes that can foster a more equitable future for all.
In summary, the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference is poised to play a vital role in discussing gender equality, with a focus on ensuring that the voices of Pacific women and girls are heard and valued.
