Attorney General Graham Leung has urged legal officers to tackle emerging legal challenges and assess the current legal systems in Fiji. At the 43rd Pacific Islands Law Officers’ Annual Meeting, Leung stressed the importance of collaboration among Pacific nations to enhance justice, democracy, and the rule of law throughout the region.

“This meeting serves as more than just an opportunity to exchange experiences; it is a vital moment to build deeper partnerships. While the Pacific Islands face distinct challenges, we also share common values and aspirations,” he stated.

Leung highlighted that such forums allow for a critical examination of existing legal frameworks alongside new legal issues, urging participants to reflect on how their jurisdictions are adapting to evolving circumstances and challenges.

He reiterated that fostering unity among Pacific nations is crucial for bolstering justice and democracy, which are key components of creating peaceful, secure, and prosperous communities in the region. “A well-informed legal profession is one of the best guarantees for upholding democracy,” he noted.

Acknowledging that many island nations are under-resourced and possess limited capacities, Leung emphasized the significant impact that pooling resources could have. “By sharing and combining our resources, we can amplify our Pacific voice, influence, and competitiveness, helping us to overcome geographical and demographic challenges,” he added.

This call for unity reflects a hopeful vision for the Pacific Islands, emphasizing that collaborative efforts can lead to stronger legal frameworks and enhanced support for democracy across the region.

In summary, the Attorney General’s address serves as an important reminder of the strength found in collaboration among Pacific nations, demonstrating a commitment to addressing legal challenges together for a brighter future.
