The Pacific Recyclers Alliance, a newly established organization, has achieved significant strides in enhancing grassroots recycling initiatives and empowering those involved in the collection of recyclables, referred to as Collection Pillars of Recycling. This development emerged from the 4th Clean Pacific Round Table (CPRT) held by SPREP in Tuvalu.
According to the Pacific Recycling Foundation, which serves as the Secretariat for the Pacific Recyclers Alliance, this accomplishment is a landmark for the CPR community and the broader grassroots recycling movement.
Amitesh Deo, the founder of the Pacific Recycling Foundation and Secretary of the Pacific Recyclers Alliance, noted that the outcomes of the CPRT include the recognition of the Alliance’s formation, which aims to unify six existing National Recyclers Associations. This consolidation seeks to enhance waste management and pollution control efforts across the Pacific region while supporting the essential contributions of Collection Pillars of Recycling in member states.
Pacific Island Countries and Territories have also been encouraged to establish National Recyclers Associations to broaden participation and representation in the Alliance.
Deo expressed the Alliance’s excitement by stating, “Our voices are finally being heard.” He emphasized that the recognition of the Collection Pillars of Recycling within the CPRT is a monumental win for the countless individuals involved in the collection of recyclables in Fiji and throughout the Pacific.
He observed that this acknowledgment validates the dedication and hard work of communities that are vital to regional recycling and waste management initiatives. Furthermore, Deo highlighted that the term “Collection Pillars of Recycling,” initially developed by a group of women in Vunato, Lautoka, has gained recognition in regional discussions, a testament to the influence of informal recyclable collectors in forming sustainable waste management policies across the Pacific.
Deo stated that this recognition at the regional level not only elevates the standing of informal recyclable collectors but also enhances the framework for effective sustainable waste management practices. The Pacific Recyclers Alliance remains dedicated to continuing its advocacy and support for CPR and grassroots recycling organizations across the Pacific region.
