Pacific Prospects: How China’s Opening Could Transform Investment Opportunities

The third plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China has released a communique that outlines the key direction for the country’s economic development, drawing significant attention from economists and experts worldwide.

Last month, a special program by CGTN explored various opinions and insights from experts in the Pacific region. Notable participants included Dr. Joseph Veramu, an economist and consultant for Fiji National University, and Dr. Michael Yang, the secretary-general of the South Pacific Islands Institute of Asian Studies.

The opening up of China’s economy offers new opportunities for the Pacific. David Mahon, Executive Chairman of Mahon China Investment Management, emphasized the importance of clearly communicating this openness for investments, aiming to correct misconceptions about China.

He noted the necessity for clarity regarding the sectors that are accessible to foreign investors. Over the past two decades, Pacific island nations have collectively seen an increase in investments from China. Dr. Mahon pointed out that this has occurred in a region largely overlooked by the United States.
