The 2024 Public Service International (PSI) Oceania Sub-Regional Advisory Committee Conference is currently taking place in Nadi, aiming to promote a collaborative approach to tackling labor-related issues and exploring growth opportunities in the Pacific region.
During the official opening this morning, Parmesh Chand, the Permanent Secretary for Civil Service and Public Enterprise, emphasized that the event is gathering 50 participants from six Pacific Island countries to engage in discussions that will enhance their respective working environments.
“The Conference will focus intently on issues such as climate justice, labor migration, insourcing, opposition to privatization, support for indigenous workers, adherence to International Labour standards, and capacity building,” Chand explained.
He noted that the government has introduced several initiatives to tackle labor migration and other related challenges within the Civil Service.
“The government has eliminated contractual conditions, implemented tenure service, and enacted a salary adjustment that entails pay increases ranging from 7 to 20 percent. Additionally, the Government has launched the Internship and Graduate Trainee program to help our qualified population fill existing skill gaps,” he stated.
Chand revealed that the Ministry of Civil Service is currently updating the General Orders to enhance the terms and conditions of employment for civil servants.
He expressed confidence in a positive future for work in Fiji, thanks to the effective tripartite mechanisms now in place and the strategies included in the new National Development Plan.
“Fiji is better positioned to comply with International Labour Organization standards and adopt best practices,” Chand reassured attendees.
Youth representatives from member countries of the Oceania Sub-Regional Advisory Committee Conference (OSRAC) are also attending this year’s conference.
