The Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua, has advocated for the establishment of a formal alliance among Pacific Island nations to address escalating maritime security challenges.
During the Maritime Security Conference held at the Grand Pacific Hotel, the Minister proposed an initiative called the “Oceanic Alliance for the Security of Island States” (OASIS) that aims to safeguard the region from various threats, including illegal fishing, transnational crime, and the impacts of climate change.
Mr. Tikoduadua emphasized the deep connection Pacific inhabitants have with the ocean, stating that their food security, economic well-being, and overall quality of life are closely tied to maritime security. He urged for urgent measures to ensure the protection and integrity of the maritime domain.
In discussing the strategic significance of the Blue Pacific, he noted that the ongoing geopolitical rivalry between China and the United States, along with their allies, has drawn increased attention to Fiji and its neighboring countries. He underscored the necessity for the Pacific to take control of its resources and make resolute moves to secure its future.
British High Commissioner Brian Jones reinforced the Minister’s comments by addressing the evolving nature of maritime security, stating that it extends beyond surface issues to include concerns about the seabed, underwater cables, and satellite operations that are vital for modern shipping.
Additionally, Munkhtuya Altangerel, the UNDP Resident Representative for the Pacific Office, highlighted the importance of empowering local maritime communities as the “first line of defense” against threats in the expansive Pacific Ocean. She asserted that if communities are strong and vigilant, potential adversaries are likely to reconsider their actions.
The two-day Maritime Security Conference brought together representatives from various government agencies, King’s College London, and other stakeholders to foster collaboration and explore ways to sustain and protect Fiji’s maritime areas for the benefit of both current and future generations.
