“Pacific Leaders Urged to Forge Stronger Alliances Amidst Growing Challenges”

Mark Brown, the chair of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), called on Foreign Affairs Ministers from the region to meet in Suva on Friday to not rely solely on the goodwill of others. In his opening remarks at the 2024 Forum Foreign Ministers Meeting, Mr. Brown highlighted the increasing geostrategic interests that the region faces.

He emphasized the ongoing battle against the intensifying climate crisis and pointed to new challenges such as cyber-attacks and transnational crime. Mr. Brown stressed the importance of political solidarity in ensuring that member countries can respond collectively when needed.

Amid these challenges, he expressed satisfaction that the ministers were taking time to enhance their shared priorities and strengthen their progress. He highlighted the need for a strategic and assertive approach to engagement to achieve their collective vision for 2050, ensuring that partners align with their priorities.

Mr. Brown urged all participants to be open, constructive, and honest in their discussions to make the most out of the meeting. As he nears the end of his tenure as chair, he expressed gratitude to the ministers for their collaboration and support throughout his leadership of the Pacific Islands Forum, noting it has been an honor to serve in this capacity.
